Workers at Bank of New York Mellon were told Thursday that they will return to the office under a hybrid work arrangement beginning next month.

Employees received an email from CEO Todd Gibbons stating that the return to work would begin on March 7 “where conditions allow and subject to local requirements”.

About 48,000 employees worldwide would be able to use the hybrid system to work a mix of office and home-based hours. Since March 2020, most people have been working from home.

“Managers will work with their teams to decide the days they will be in the office. The model will continue to evolve over time as we learn more on what is working well and what isn’t.”Todd Gibbons, CEO, BNY Mellon (in an email)

It’s possible, he said, that the company will allow some employees to work remotely for two weeks each year later this year.

The policy, which BNY Mellon first announced in the summer, requires all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before coming to work, visiting clients, or attending internal or external events, according to Mr. Gibbons. A number of major American corporations have implemented vaccination requirements similar to those of the CDC.

What would happen if employees didn’t follow the email’s instructions? For medical or religious reasons, the company says it will make “reasonable” accommodations.

“As the COVID environment continues to change, PNC will continue to consider key indicators, follow CDC guidelines as well as state and local ordinances, and consult with the medical community as we make decisions.”Marcey Zwiebel, Spokeswoman (in an email)

Over a thousand people are employed by the New York-based trust and custody giant in this region. A breakdown of employee numbers has been withheld by the business.

It has yet to announce a mandatory return date for Pittsburgh-based PNC Financial Services Group, one of the city’s largest employers. When working from a PNC location, she explained, employees must perform a daily self-administered health check prior to reporting to work.

At its downtown headquarters and First Avenue call centre, PNC employs about 12,500 people. Despite the pandemic, branch employees have been required to wear masks to work.
