Working in HR can be a rewarding career. Hiring and retaining staff is an important business function that suits people who like problem-solving and, of course, people! But what entry-level HR jobs are there, and which ones can you do while working from home?

Can I Apply For HR With No Experience?

There are four main routes into working in HR: getting a college degree in HR or a business-related subject, getting certified in HR, an internship, or  transferring into HR from another department. 

Let’s look at those a little more closely.

HR Degrees

A bachelor’s degree is usually a requirement for HR roles, even at entry level. This can be a specific HR degree, but because there is a lot of overlap between HR and other business functions, it can be an MBA or other kind of business degree as well.

If you don’t already have a degree, but you’re serious about a career in HR, then studying for an HR degree part-time may be a good option for you. HR Certification

The SHRM is the biggest membership organization in HR, and they offer two levels of hr certification. The SHRM-CP or Certified Professional level exam is four hours long and is made up of 134 questions, both knowledge-based and situational, to test how you would apply your understanding. Once you are working in HR, you are able to either re-certify or advance and take the Senior Certified Professional training.

Alternatively, the HRCI has been an established global standard for HR certification and further training for over 45 years, and they offer HR certification for under $500.

Internship

Internships are a time-honored way to get a foot in the door, giving you a chance to spend some time working in a role and see if it really suits you. Finding a remote internship is challenging. However, there are some great resources out there to help you, including:

  • LinkedIn – use your own network to put out a request for a position, or use the site’s job search feature to find potential internships – set an alert so you get to know as soon as something is listed.
  • Indeed – the job listing giant also hosts adverts for internships, and you can filter to only see remote roles.
  • Intern matching sites like Interns.com, Internmatch.com, and YouTern, which connect interns with prospects via social media

Don’t neglect local networking opportunities, either. HR is a people-oriented role, and who you know is important to succeeding in it. The SHRB also offers student membership that allows you to connect with other members that could also be a good source of leads.

Internal Transfer

If you already work for a company, then you might be able to transfer into the HR department from your current role. Your starting point would either be your line manager or the HR manager and explore the options of you taking a sabbatical to see if you enjoy it or transferring when a position becomes vacant.

If you’re wondering, can I apply for HR with no experience? The answer is yes – as long as you have some knowledge or skills to make up for the lack, for example, a degree or certification. Here are some examples of entry-level HR jobs.

1. Associate – AskHR 

In this role, you will be talking to AskHR’s customers, which could be managers or employees and helping them resolve their problems. AskHR has numerous clients, so this job provides variety as well as a salary starting at $37,000.

2. Healthcare Recruiter – Boulder City Hospital

With a salary of $25-30 dollars per hour, this is one of a small number of remote, part-time entry-level hr jobs. You’ll be working with an HR database to update adverts and source candidates.

3. HR Generalist – Foodguys

4. Employee Services Representative – Pella Corporation

You can pick your own hours and work schedule with this role, which involves creating job listings and handling initial communication with applicants before handing them over to the team at Keller Williams. One of the few remote hr jobs where you can set your own hours.

6. Talent Acquisition Specialist – Recruit N Refer

In a commission-based position, you’ll be sourcing, screening, and submitting candidates for accounting roles. You’ll need to be tech-savvy and willing to build long-term relationships with people to get the best hires.

7. Talent Coordinator – Health Back Institute

If you’re highly organized and have a passion for scheduling, then this role could be for you. Working between 25 and 30 hours per week, you’ll support recruiters and hiring leaders with scheduling, create agendas, and make sure actions get completed.
