Washington DC Was the Top City for Remote Work in 2021, According to Data

In 2021, the number of people working from home in Washington DC was the highest of any large city in the US. The city had employees 16 and older working remotely, seven times more than before the pandemic.

Across the United States, the number of remote workers significantly increased due to the pandemic. But even when returning to the office was possible, companies and employees still chose to work from home. And Washington DC became the city with the highest amount of remote workers in the country.

Washington DC: A Remote Workers City

According to the 2021 American Community Survey data, the number of people working primarily from home in Washington, DC, was the highest of any large city in the United States.

The number of remote workers increased everywhere; in general, nearly 18% of employees across the US worked from home. This is 3 times more than the number before the pandemic. But this number increased even more in large cities.

In the District, 48.3% of employees worked remotely in 2021, compared with around 6 or 7% between 2017 and 2019. The second city with the highest number of remote workers was Seattle with 46.8%, San Francisco with 45.6%, Austin with 38.8%, and Atlanta with 38.7%.
