Remote Work Could Reduce Traffic In Dubai By 30%

Dubai´s government found that remote work and flexible hours could reduce traffic in the city by up to 30%.

The middle eastern city’s population grew by 400,000 since 2020 to 3.8 million in 2024. Because of this, traffic is now a huge issue!

The city now has to accommodate roughly 3.4 million cars on the road during commuting hours.

Consequentially, the government is encouraging remote work for public and private employees.

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority, and Dubai Government Human Resources Department, released a report in November. They examined flexible hours for 332,000 public and private sector workers.

The study found that a wider adoption of remote work could lead to up to 30% less congested streets.

Additionally, they found that while just 32% of private companies offer remote work options, 58% are considering more. Plus, 31% have flexible start times.

They recommend that employers offer remote work up to five days a week and a two-hour flexible start time.

Dubai’s commissioner general for infrastructure, urban planning, and well-being, released a statement.

“Remote work and flexible working hours are among the traffic demand management policies aimed at achieving balance in the transport system,” Mattar Al Tayer said.

“It reduces and redistributes demand across time and place while promoting sustainable transport options.”

He concluded saying: “Additionally, they support public transport use for employees and encourage carpooling.”
