A new list from SmartAsset reveals the U.S. cities with the highest percentage of remote workers.
They ranked 349 of the largest U.S. cities. Additionally, they examined average commute times for those not working from home, as well as transportation modes used for the commute.
A median of 12.5% of employees work from home in the U.S.
However, some cities see as many as three in 10 workers working remotely, while others maintain an in-person workforce.
The reason is infrastructure varies in every city, as well as local demographics. Studies show the portion of remote workers impact the dynamics of a city.
According to the study, these are the five cities with the highest percentage of remote workers:
- Frisco Texas: 34.16%
- Berkeley, California: 31.29%
- Charlotte, North Carolina: 29.71%
- Carytown, North Carolina: 29.4%
- Carlsbad, California: 29.06%
Frisco has the highest portion of remote workers nationwide, with over 40,000 people. All of the remaining commuters drive or carpool to work, with an average commute time of 30 minutes.
More than 25% of the workforce is remote in 22 cities. This includes Charlotte, Arlington, Seattle, Boulder, Austin, Scottsdale, Washington, Denver, Bellevue, Portland, and Atlanta.
Finally, Odessa, Texas has the proportionally smallest remote workforce of large U.S. cities. Only 1,036 workers are estimated to be remote out of a workforce of over 65,000.
