Job Description:
WhatJobs is seeking a highly experienced Senior Mining Engineer to join our San Diego-based team providing remote technical support and project management for our mining operations located elsewhere. While this role is based in our corporate office, you will be integral to the planning, analysis, and optimization of mining projects, leveraging technology to support field teams. You will be responsible for complex engineering analysis, developing strategies for resource extraction, ensuring operational efficiency, and contributing to safety and environmental compliance from a distance. This position requires extensive mining engineering expertise, strong analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with remote site personnel.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide senior-level technical support and guidance to remote mining operations.
- Analyze geological data and ore body models for mine planning and design.
- Develop and optimize mine plans, schedules, and sequences using specialized software.
- Perform engineering calculations related to rock mechanics, ventilation, dewatering, and infrastructure.
- Evaluate mining methods and equipment, recommending improvements for efficiency and safety.
- Conduct feasibility studies and economic analysis for new or existing projects.
- Monitor operational performance data and identify areas for optimization.
- Utilize mine planning and simulation software.
- Ensure mining operations comply with engineering standards, regulations, and environmental policies.
- Prepare detailed reports and presentations on mine planning, performance, and analysis.
- Collaborate with geologists, metallurgists, and operational teams remotely.
- Conduct remote site visits or travel to sites occasionally as required.
- Support the implementation of new mining technologies.
- Assist with risk assessment and mitigation planning for operations.
- Develop strategies for resource estimation and reserve reporting.
- Provide technical input for budgeting and forecasting.
- Mentor junior engineers or technical staff supporting mining operations.
- Stay updated on advancements in mining engineering and technology.
- Troubleshoot complex technical issues reported from the field.
- Contribute to long-term strategic planning for WhatJobs’ mining portfolio.
- Review and approve technical documentation from site teams.
- Ensure sustainable and responsible mining practices are considered.
- Assist with permitting and compliance documentation from a technical perspective.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mining Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 7+ years of experience in mining engineering, with experience in mine planning, design, or operations support.
- Experience with mine planning software (e.g., Maptek Vulcan, Deswik, Dassault GEOVIA).
- Strong understanding of mining methods (open-pit, underground) and operations.
- Proficiency in engineering calculations and analysis.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with remote teams and site personnel.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
- Knowledge of relevant mining regulations and safety standards.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to interpret geological and geotechnical data.
- Experience with economic analysis for mining projects.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent is a strong plus.
- Must be eligible to work in the US.
- Ability to travel occasionally to remote sites.
- Experience with remote monitoring and data analysis tools is beneficial.
